A major way Seoul’s infrastructure promotes
these extreme cases is through PC Bangs, establishments which contain hundreds
of PC booths with high speed internet access, food, drinks and even beds to
sleep in. This environment is the “Safe Haven” atmosphere Dr Kimberly Young had
previously stated, allowing PC bang customers to successfully detach themselves
from the outside world (http://internetrising.net, 2011). Seoul has an estimated 2 million
addicts who spend 5 days to a week consecutively at PC Bangs, with the
detachment from the outside world also comes detachment of accountability and
responsibility of the outside world.
The
combination of these issues derived from environment and acceptance of violence
from excessive gaming, is what has empowered the individuals to grant
themselves permissions to
perform acts of violence in the extreme cases.
